520 _aHysteria is the “normal” way of any subject, who asks the question: “Am I female or male?” The peculiarity of masculine hysteria is to reject one’s own feminine side. The psychical qualities of “masculinity” and “femininity” never exist one without the other, but in a conflictual way, causing hysterical crises of varying degree. One must add some masculine characteristics to this “crisis”, more visible in contemporary times because of the Women’s Liberation movement. Hysterical masculine desire is marked by a kind of nostalgia between maternal separation and the feminine Ideal, of which the origin is quite different.
