520 _aSenior housing offers an environment and services adapted to the difficulties linked to old age, while preserving privacy and independent living. The proponents of senior housing seek to preserve the feeling of home, which is dear to elderly people. To examine determinants of feeling at home, we note the importance of the appropriation of community spaces by new residents. A process of negotiation between the new resident and the community defines the rules of shared spaces. This negotiation requires various resources. We show that although senior housing can offer the feeling of home, it does not guarantee it. Using interviews and ethnographic observation in French Senior Living Communities, we describe the appropriation process of community spaces. We specify the impact of these spaces on the feeling of home. Moreover, this study adds to the literature on senior housing and its place in the field of environmental gerontology.
