Certain prepositional phrases involving selon X indicate that the speaker has borrowed the information that he communicates from the verbal source specified by the complement of the preposition (X). These selon X, can, in certain conditions, introduce “discourse frames” including several sentences. Once such a discourse frame is opened, it integrates each new sentence until some linguistic or typographical mark indicates the closing of the frame. Full noun phrases coreferring with X necessarily mark the closing of the discourse frames introduced by selon X. Our paper aims at accounting for this phenomenon. We show that it cannot be explained within the framework of S. Reinhart’s syntactic theory (1981, 1983) and propose an explanation which appears to be compatible with K. Van Hoek’s semanticcognitive model (1995).
