Cet article met en évidence les définitions et les enjeux des expériences vécues par les jeunes filles «  au pair ». Il montre comment le statut au pair est présenté dans la diffusion du programme d’échange, comment celui-ci diffère du travail domestique réel et comment les femmes concernées le définissent. Pour illustrer ces propos, nous utilisons l’expérience de jeunes filles au pair brésiliennes qui, tout en voulant se distinguer de la représentation qu’elles ont de ce métier, sont devenues « nounous » en France, à la fin du programme d’échange. Ainsi, cet article montre les écarts possibles entre le statut d’un emploi, le contenu d’un travail et les différentes expériences subjectives qui en sont faites.

This paper will highlight the definitions of the “ au pair”’s experiences and their implications. It shows how the status of au pair is promoted and used in the dissemination of the exchange programme, how it differs from real domestic work and how au pairs define it. To illustrate this, we use the experience of Brazilian au pairs who, while wanting to distinguish themselves from the representation they have of this job, became “ nounous” in France at the end of the exchange programme. Thus, this paper shows the possible gaps between the status of a job, the content of a work and the different subjective experiences of it.
