This article presents the authors’ reflections on the new perspectives that the concept of ‘constructive consumption’ brings to the analysis of the processes of ‘technical democracy’. The history of technology proposed here seeks to interrogate the narration and self-narration of technical narratives, past and present, while at the same time exploring the macro/micro politics, meaning and impact of technologies as practiced in and between spaces considered then or now as political or cultural units. The contrasting histories of the adaptation of two cooking appliances, the pressure-cooker and the microwave, to the expectations of the French public, viewed in the context of the history of the Arts Ménagers movement, offer an opportunity to explore the subtleties of constructive consumption and to feed the debate on technical democracy.

Cet article offre une réflexion sur les nouvelles perspectives apportées par le concept de « constructive consumption » aux débats sur l’analyse du concept de la « Démocratie technique ». L’histoire des techniques ici proposée cherche à interroger la narration et l’auto-narration des récits techniques, passés et présents, tout en sondant simultanément la macro/micro-politique, l’importance et l’impact des techniques telles qu’elles sont pratiquées dans/entre des espaces considérés à l’époque ou aujourd’hui comme des unités politiques ou culturelles. Les histoires contrastées de l’adaptation des appareils culinaires aux attentes du public français et l’histoire du mouvement des Arts ménagers offrent une opportunité d’explorer les subtilités de la consommation constructive et de nourrir le débat sur la démocratie technique.
