N2  - L’article interroge la catégorisation politique « outre-mer » à l’aune de trois terrains de recherche : le champ associatif et les mobilisations de personnes originaires d’outre-mer en France hexagonale ; les partis politiques de droite à la Martinique et leurs rapports à l’UMP nationale ; le rôle des groupes d’intérêt dans la construction de l’enjeu « Outre-mer » dans la campagne présidentielle de 2012. La catégorie outre-mer y est d’abord interrogée dans sa réalité administrative, du point de vue du traitement étatique ou national des territoires considérés. L’article rend compte du caractère construit et évolutif de ses frontières. L’attention se porte ensuite sur la manière dont la catégorie est appropriée ou non par les acteurs des terrains concernés. Tenir ainsi la catégorie « par les deux bouts » révèle qu’elle est loin d’être construite de manière unilatérale par les acteurs étatiques, mais aussi qu’elle fait l’objet d’usages stratégiques multiformes qui lui confèrent une frappante plurivocité; In this article, the authors seek to engage with the political categorization “outre-mer” –which is used to designate French Overseas Territories - through the study of three distinct research sites : 1) the associations and the collective mobilization of French citizens coming from these territories (the migrants and their descendants) ; 2) the relationship between local right-wing political parties and the national UMP (the main right-wing political party in France) ; 3) the role of interest groups in shaping claims and issues revolving around the “outre-mer” during presidential campaigns. The authors first analyze the administrative dimension of the category “outre-mer”, and seek to understand the practical dimensions of the French state’s relationship to these territories. One finding is that despite the legal and administrative definitions, the frontiers of such a category are actually shifting and unsettled. Then, the article moves to an analysis of how the social actors in the various fields of research appropriate or reject the notion. Both dimensions seem unavoidable and reveal that the category “outre-mer” is not simply a top-down category imposed to social actors. Instead, the study reveals its (sometimes strategic and political) appropriations
