<br/><br/> RésuméSi Voltaire a tardivement composé des textes analysant L’Esprit des lois, son véritable commentaire se trouve dans les textes historiques qui répondent aux théories de Montesquieu sur le gouvernement. Les concepts de despotisme, de monarchie absolue, d’honneur, les fondements historiques et constitutionnels de la monarchie française, la question de l’historicité des mœurs constituent les entrées de cet examen qui met en valeur les convergences thématiques des deux penseurs.  Voltaire’s true commentary on The Spirit of the Laws is not to be found in his tardy analyses but in historical writings which address Montesquieu’s theories of government. The concepts of despotism, absolute monarchy, honor, the historical and constitutional foundations of French Democracy, the historical character of customs, constitute key issues in the present survey of the two thinkers’ converging topics.
