Multifamily Therapy and Rite of Passage: When Belonging to a Social Community Heals Family Ties

Multiple family therapy is an approach that is at the interface of group therapy and family therapy. This therapeutic method groups together several families around a shared problem or pathology with the aim of creating a social and therapeutic setting and network (Cook-Darzens, 2007). We propose to analyze multiple family therapy in the light of the three phases of the concept of rite of passage developed by Etienne Dessoy (1996, 1997): the phase of cohesion/ separation, the phase of ritualization of different points of view and the phase of confirmation of success of the rite. How can the conceptualization of multiple family therapy as a process of rite of passage help to explain change?
