The prospect of gender reassignment surgery in adolescence: to decide or not to decide?
- 2022.

As gender dysphoria is increasingly present in our consultations, requests for medical assistance in gender reassignment, hormonal and/or surgical, are likely to increase. If gender identity and the choice of sexual object are not solely and exclusively the result of a predetermined physiological process, preserving the freedom of choice for each human being means accepting the condition of doubt, however painful it may be. From a care perspective, it seems important to us to be attentive to the way in which the adolescent envisages the various actions to be undertaken and the possible pain to be faced. The tension between “psychic suffering and bodily pain”, which may or may not be a source of hesitation, may be a useful paradigm to address in the discussion with the adolescent who wishes to make the transition.
