Throughout Freud’s work the concept of “cultural superego” is present under various forms. It relies on external contributions to psychoanalysis, all of which proved to be fragile, and pushed Freud to take sexist stands which immediately shocked many analysts. Civilizations go through periods of latency after serious crises, resembling the latency period following the Œdipus complex, however this analogy does not suffice to say that civilizations have a “superego”.
