N2  - Gout attacks are a fairly common reason for seeking primary care, and their management is essential due to the pain and major functional disability that they cause. However, gout disease does not disappear after treatment of the gout attack. Hyperuricemia can lead to many other complications, which may be rheumatological, metabolic, cardiovascular, or renal. The question therefore arises, beyond the treatment of acute gout attacks, of whether to take a new look at gout disease and the importance of a uric acid-lowering background treatment. What data are available? Is hyperuricemia a simple association or an independent risk factor to be considered as such?
