This article studies the role of sports instructors in the process of sexed socialization under way in a municipal sports centre for young people from urban working-class areas. The author shows how the instructors’ teaching methods, their relational skills and the gender model they present in interaction all contribute to the sex distribution in the activities. They also influence teenage gender behaviour in the centre by helping to construct sex-based hierarchies and sociability among the young.
