<br/><br/> L’économie rurale considérée comme objet d’étude pour les Sciences Sociales a-t-elle encore une identité légitime ? En analysant l’espace économique et social dans lequel les agricultures et les territoires sont aujourd’hui insérés, il apparaît que l’économie rurale se trouve au coeur de débats contemporains et fournit des terrains d’investigation attractifs pour le développement des connaissances scientifiques. L’économie rurale, longtemps identifiée à l’économie agricole ou agro-alimentaire, devient une analyse compréhensive des relations entre la nature, la ruralité, l’alimentation, l’agriculture et la société globale. L’économie rurale trouve alors une actualité et une identité justifiées au nom de sa contribution aux progrès scientifique et au débat social.  Does the rural economy, considered as object of study for Social Sciences, still have a legitimate identity? By analyzing the economic and social context into which agricultures and territories are inserted today, it turns out that the rural economy is in the heart of contemporary debates and supplies attractive fields of investigation for the development of scientific knowledge. The rural economy, for a long time identified with the agricultural or food-processing economy, becomes a comprehensive analysis of the relations between the nature, the rural life, the food, the agriculture and the global society. The rural economy finds then a topicality and an identity justified in the name of its contribution to the scientific progress and to the social debate.
