Interpreting Poetry and the Horrors of History: Introduction to Jean Bollack’s Conference on Paul Celan in Lille - 2003.

In reading two recent books on Paul Celan by Jean Bollack we show how the hermeneutic method elaborated by the great philologist allowed him to decipher one of the most difficult poetic works ever written. We argue that Bollack’s restitution of the sens and the reference of a great number of Celan’s poems contrasts with many vague and arbitrary comments which mask the political signification of Celan’s poetry.
