N2  - ‪Pierre Bourdieu’s approach to the use of factorial analysis in his famous Distinction has shaped historiography. Both the concept of distinction and the statistical tool are now widely used, carrying an implicit Bourdieusian meaning, sometimes inappropriate to historical contexts other than post-war France. This article focuses on a factorial analysis run on sixty funerary objects from the Later Middle Ages, showing that distinction is not universal. It argues that three successive regimes of relationships to objects can be identified, Bourdieu’s distinction being only the most recent.‪
