Contemporary history of Western concern for the environment and the associated attempts to protect it go far back in time. Early environmental concerns, and critiques regarding the impact of Western economic forces on tropical environments in particular, emerged as the upshot of, and in a sense in contradiction to, the history of the mental and material colonization of the world by Europeans. Evidence shows that the seeds of modern conservationism developed as part and parcel of the European encounter with the tropics.
