<br/><br/> ‪Based on a thorough analysis of extensive literature – including a study of a register of “estimes” of 1485 – the article aims to distinguish the wealth and role of the wealthiest inhabitants of Massa Marittima – an episcopal city in the south of the Sienese territory – in local political life. It shows how they have contributed, in a tense social context, to defining the wealth of the inhabitants, taking into account complex political requirements.‪
