Cet article remonte au 19e siècle pour mieux comprendre pourquoi et comment les dirigeants américains ont fini par accorder une importance stratégique exceptionnelle à l’Indochine après la Seconde guerre mondiale. Cet essai avance l’idée selon laquelle on ne peut pas comprendre l’engagement américain en Indochine après 1945 sans le resituer dans son contexte géopolitique et impérial vu du Pacifique. Pour le meilleur ou le pire, les Américains ont fait de l’Indochine un maillon essentiel dans une chaîne défensive visant à protéger les intérêts américains non seulement en Asie du Sud-Est mais aussi dans l’océan Pacifique, ce « lac américain » cachant un empire maritime datant du 19e siècle. La fixation américaine sur l’Indochine amènera Washington à intervenir indirectement en Indochine en soutenant les Français contre Ho Chi Minh avant de faire leur propre guerre au Vietnam dans les années 1960.

This article returns to the 19th century to understand how and why American leaders ended up attributing exceptional strategic importance to Indochina. This essay argues that one cannot understand American intervention in Indochina after 1945 without considering the wider geopolitical and imperial context in the Pacific. For better or worse, Americans made Indochina into the linchpin of a defensive line designed to protect American interests not only in Southeast Asia, but throughout the Pacific, the “American Lake” behind which a maritime empire had stood since the 19th century. This fixation would lead Americans to intervene indirectly in Indochina by supporting the French against Ho Chi Minh, and would then lead them directly into their own war in Vietnam in the 1960s.
