Cet article se propose de caractériser l’activité scientifique et ses conditions de validation dans la France du début du xixe siècle à travers les mémoires rejetés par l’Académies des sciences de Paris entre 1795 et 1835. Les reproches récurrents contenus dans les rapports négatifs permettent de dessiner en creux la scientificité <officielle> du temps : exigences de rigueur, d’actualité et de fondement. L’utilité mais aussi les limites de la simple réplication d’une expérience sont mises en évidence sur le cas de l’identification du chlore dans les années 1810-1811.

The judgment of the Academy of Sciences from 1795 to 1835: Negative reports as an illustration of scientific (in)correctness. This article aims to characterise scientific activity and its ratification in France at the beginning of the 19th century by using the memoirs rejected by the Paris Academy of Sciences between 1795 and 1835.  The recurring criticisms found in the negative reports allow one to sketch in relief the ‘official’ view of science at that time: a demand for rigor, topicality, and soundness.  The utility as well as the limitations of the repetition of an experiment alone are illustrated using the case of the identification of chlorine in the period 1810-1811.
