La relation entre les Français et leur armée fut complexe dans les années 1960-1980 avec un antimilitarisme latent très sensible dans l’opposition de gauche. Cette méfiance obligeait l’institution militaire à se transformer et à mieux prendre en compte les aspirations du contingent d’une part, et le besoin de reconnaissance pour les cadres d’active d’autre part. Ces mutations ont permis d’atteindre un consensus large autour de la défense.

The period from 1960 to 1980 witnessed a complex relationship between the French people and their armed forces. There existed a latent anti-military sentiment, notably among the politically left opposition. This distrust forced the military establishment to change and to take better account of the aspirations of conscripts and the need for improved recognition of career personnel. These changes resulted in broad consensus on defence matters.
