Fondée sur une analyse fouillée d’une ample documentation – notamment l’étude d’un registre d’estimes de 1485 – l’article vise à distinguer la richesse et le rôle des habitants les plus aisés de Massa Marittima – une cité épiscopale du Sud du territoire siennois – dans la vie politique locale. Il montre combien ils ont contribué, dans un contexte social tendu, à définir la fortune des habitants, en tenant compte d’exigences politiques complexes.

‪Based on a thorough analysis of extensive literature – including a study of a register of “estimes” of 1485 – the article aims to distinguish the wealth and role of the wealthiest inhabitants of Massa Marittima – an episcopal city in the south of the Sienese territory – in local political life. It shows how they have contributed, in a tense social context, to defining the wealth of the inhabitants, taking into account complex political requirements.‪
