The CECQ: A new assessment tool to study the development of emotion comprehension in children

Studying the development of emotion recognition and emotion comprehension is fundamental. The CECQ (Child Emotion Comprehension Questionnaire) has been validated in French and developed to examine the development of emotion recognition skills in children. This test is composed of 2 parts. The first part assesses the recognition of facial expressions. The second part assesses the ability to infer an emotion through a context. French-speaking children aged from 41 to 135 months participated in this study (n = 284). The results showed that joy was the best recognized emotion, regardless of age and presentation modality (facial expression vs. story). Fear is best recognized in a story with a context, rather than on a face, unlike anger. These results show the very gradual sharing of conventions for representing emotions on the face and in stories during development. This French-language assessment can be used by professionals involved in the development of children’s emotional reasoning.
