Temporality and Psychosis in Family Therapy

Based on P. Aulagnier’s contribution to the question of temporality in psychosis, this article shows how therapeutic work with the family of a psychotic child, within the framework of institutional care, contributes to place the child in a temporal dimension. This is through a process of family auto-historiography which often leads to give a meaning to the unthinkable, to a void in the child’s psychic origins. The characteristic of therapeutic work consists of the reworking of the first parents’ identifiers toward the child, thus releasing the child from the repetition of parental non-symbolised aspects, which placed the child in the timelessness of an already present moment, taking into account the “here and now” of the family meeting, the updating of the child’s agonistic experiences and the methods of parental responses to their child’s catastrophic anxieties.
