When illness bursts into the life of a couple

This article aims to study the changes produced within a couple, when one of the partners is diagnosed with a neuromuscular disease, years after they first met. The approach is based on the case study of a couple explored through a research interview using two tools: a mediation with the game of the goose proposed to the couple, followed by an individual interview with each partner. The disease can strengthen the couple’s unconscious pact, but also shake its foundations and lead to a crisis leaving each partner facing their own suffering. This crisis can appear well after the diagnosis, especially on onset for the affected partner of disabling symptoms. During specialised medical consultations, the clinical psychologist plays a crucial role in identifying risk situations and working to ensure that the patient’s couple is also ‘cared for’ and that the partner’s experiences, just like the patient’s, may be given attention to at least alleviate the effects of the disease.
