Lesbian motherhood, a social analyser

Using the data from seven non-directive interviews with lesbian mothers and co-parents, it is shown, from a psycho-sociological perspective, how these families deal with the heteronormative family model, still central in their lives and parenting choices. This paper cross-references and extends Descoutures’ sociological and Ducousso-Lacaze’s clinical results. The author proposes to address these issues in three areas: 1/ how they address the social stigma of homosexuality and how this leads them to see their children as exposed to a risk of discrimination and violence, 2/ the position created for and by the biological mother’s partner and in relation to contemporary family transformations, 3/ the place granted to masculinity and the paternal function by these women who, contrary to popular assumptions, consider such involvement a real necessity for their children.
