As a specifically feminine possession, the persistence of a comfort blanket in adulthood poses a double question about the underlying mechanism typical of the female psyche, and what binds her so closely to this simple piece of fabric. The anatomy of the comfort object, which is a surface for shapeless sensory projection and almost unrepresentable, seems to reproduce the shapelessness of the female sex, with unclear boundaries that are identified through internal, non-perceptive “sensory representations.” As an object for falling asleep, the soothing and anesthetic comfort blanket sends these women into a heavy sleep, leaving the auto-eroticism of infantile sexuality out of genitality—as if it were asleep. Moreover, with its magic, fantastic properties, the comfort blanket seems to be the object of an erotic complicity between a girl and her mother and it offers the possibility of a homo-erotic treatment, to regain each night the lost sensuality of the maternal world.
