RésuméLe labour à bras collectif, fort répandu dans les sociétés agraires traditionnelles, doit-il être considéré comme une technique rudimentaire de préparation du sol ? Son maintien dans le nord-ouest du Portugal, où il coexiste avec d’autres techniques de labour plus évoluées, pose plusieurs questions. La description de cette pratique aratoire permet de mettre en évidence sa spécificité et son efficacité. L’analyse du contexte physique et humain de la communauté agropastorale où elle a été observée conduit à proposer une interprétation, tant technique que sociale, de sa performance.

Should hoeing, which is widespread in traditional agrarian societies, be considered as a rudimentary technique of soil preparation ? Its upholding in Northwestern Portugal where it coexists with more advanced ploughing techniques raises several questions. The specificity and effectiveness of this ploughing technique can be stressed through its description. The analysis of the physical and human context of the agropastoral community in which it has been observed leads us to a technical as well as social interpretation of its achievements.

ZusammenfassungMuss man das in Agrargesellschaften weit verbreitete « Kollektive Hacken » als rudimentäre Technik der Bodenbearbeitung ansehen ? Die Tatsache, dass sie im Nord-Westen Portugals neben anderen, höher entwickelten Techniken weiterhin besteht, wirft mehrere Fragen auf. Die Eigenarten und Effektivität dieser Technik werden hier beschrieben. Die Analyse der physischen und sozialen Zusammenhänge der landwirtschaftlichen Gemeinschaft, in der sie angewendet wird, führt zu einer technischen und einer sozialen Erklärung ihrer Anwendung.
