The imaginary relationship of giving and receiving in post-mortem organ donation

Par : Contributeur(s) : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2018. Sujet(s) : Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : The aim of this study is to understand the characteristics of post-mortem organ donation in terms of pure gift, infinite debt, and imaginary relationship to others. Starting with the analysis of organ donation from the perspective of the asymmetrical exchange of life and death, this article examines the specificity of the feeling of debt and guilt that some recipients have experienced following an organ transplantation. It then proposes a critical analysis of the mechanistic and utilitarian discourses that aim to reduce human organs to a substance without a soul. Next, we will discuss the account of a recipient who wants to bond with the deceased donor through the imagination of a fictional kinship relationship. By examining this account, we will see how the recipient finally accepts the donor’s organ and creates a personalized imaginary relationship with the donor.
