The aim of this paper is to show that the housing conditions of youths facing long?lasting job precariousness participate in various ways in the youths’ (re)definition of their social status and social perception of themselves, adding complexity to their access to adulthood. These housing conditions indicate the diversity of inherited popular experiences and also the difficulties for some youths to confront an unexperienced world, which leads them to face a decline in social status and pushes their family to try to stop this fall. We have identified three forms of archetypal residential experiences according to the effectiveness of familial support: living with family members out of necessity (cohabitation out of necessity), living in one’s own home with familial support (protected de?cohabitation), and living in one’s own home without any familial support (unprotected de?cohabitation).
