Managing role conflicts to reduce stress for local managers

This research concerns stress among local managers in a French public enterprise (SNCF). Its first aim is to measure the impact of age on their perceived stress level. The second is to study the extent to which role conflicts and perceived social support directly and indirectly affect the perception of stress among local managers. Our theoretical framework borrows from the models of “professional development,” “the role episode,” and the direct/attenuating effect of social support. The results of the quantitative study conducted with 94 local managers show that stress is higher among managers under 45 years old than among managers over 45 years old. Role conflicts increase the level of perceived stress whereas the perception of social support reduces it. In certain cases, the interaction effects tested reveal the amplifying role of perceived social support in times of role conflict. The theoretical and practical perspectives of the study and its limitations are discussed.
