Being an orphan and a student in children’s literature. Children’s literature as a possible medium for talking about orphanhood

This article is part of a research project on the theme of orphaned children in children’s literature. It approaches this theme from the perspective of orphanhood in a school context. Thirty-three books, intended for children aged three to twelve, published in French between 2000 and 2023, address the issue of losing a parent and explicitly mention the school setting. These books’ ability to consider the particular needs of orphans attending school is analyzed in the light of Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems model. It appears that children’s literature can act as a mediator, helping the orphaned child to experience the stages of mourning and grasp both the difficulties posed and the resources offered by the school and its staff.
