Female Homosexuality and Primary Homosexuality

The emphasis long placed by many analysts on the importance of holding in psychoanalytic work is at risk of obscuring to these colleagues that the primary relationship to the mother is rooted in the sexual drives. The tender positive transference, or basic transference, essential to the treatment, can always rediscover its drive sources, which make it a female homosexual transference, even if the patient and the analyst are both men. The risk of re-sexualising the basic transference explains why some analyses can only be conducted face to face or are impossible. Rilke’s correspondence with Lou Andreas-Salomé is given as a clinical illustration of such an impossible analysis.
