The authors focus their discussion on the collapse of cultural ideals and its repercussions in the private sphere, the trauma of mourning in culture. As a psycho-historical object with a clinical status, the fracture of 1933/1940 defines a trauma that having begun as an event becomes a process. The transmutation of the trauma and the work of trauma at the time of the trauma are brought to bear there in a way that is closer to a work of overcoming and posthumous effects than a return of the repressed and deferred action. The coercion into the mourning of the self constitutes the process of this trauma.
