Where is Play? ‘Potential Space’ Revisited

Beyond the technical adaptation of the talking cure as a playing cure, child psychoanalysis involves many changes in the founding principles of the analytic process. To begin with the Winnicottian idea: psychoanalysis is a particular form of play. The author sets out to study one of the consequences of this continual expansion of the model of play for explaining the analytic experience, which is the inflation of Winnicott’s concept of transitional space. Revisiting the shift operated by Winnicott’s vision of play brings out a new theory of interpretation and the conception of the playing cure as generating an experience of space, beyond the simplistic opposition between play and interpretation.
