From essential objects to the “extended self” theory: Co-extension of fields through interdisciplinarity

In this article, the author presents, through research on the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases, recent discoveries from the biomedical field, including the role of essential object losses. Special attention is given to interdisciplinary contributions and correspondences with concepts from the fields of psychoanalysis and psychosomatics. Finally, the notion of an extended Self is discussed with its theoretical and practical implications for patients suffering from somatic diseases, as well as avenues of reflection to promote interdisciplinarity.
