From Genetics to Epigenetics: A “Postgenomic” Revolution for the Social Scientists

Par : Contributeur(s) : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2018. Sujet(s) : Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : This critical review assesses the impact of the so-called “postgenomic” revolution on the social sciences, with a look at five books published between 2016 and 2017. 2 It aims not only to introduce French readers to current debates in the English-speaking world about the current redefinition of the boundaries between sociology and biology, but also and above all to contribute to reflections on the development of interdisciplinary research practices. The article focuses in particular on the emerging field of epigenetics and the way it is presented in these studies as the pre-eminent site of the postgenomic revolution. The review underlines the importance for sociologists of understanding the opportunities associated with this revolution, as well as being able to free themselves from a number of received ideas. It also stresses the need to maintain a sufficiently critical distance from this “promising” research area.
