The author underlines the importance, both past and present, of the concept of construction in both practice and theory and considers the clinical experience of patients subjected to illness and hospitalisation at an age at which the immaturity of their ego is unable to allow them to metabolise these experiences of separation and bodily and narcissistic infraction. These patients, like borderline patients, in his opinion, constitute a strong argument in favour of construction.
