In the 1960s, Christian hope was sustained by Moltmann’s theology of the crucified God. This theology mobilised the drama of suffering to inspire Christian social action. Dialogue with liberation theologies showed the limits of this ethic, which never really achieved any political action beyond constituted bodies like the Church within society.
