In many cases, hospital workers themselves compensate pragmatically for defective work organisation by coordinating themselves within departments. In hospitals, this self-regulatory capacity relies on a strong collective identity shared by the whole staff. It also, however, has a downside, in that it tends to increase the mental pressures of the job.
