Local disparities and the economic crisis: Preliminary insights

An empirical study of the evolution of employment areas, based on firms’ data, shows that the performance of these areas cannot be exclusively attributed to their sector composition or to the stage of the economic cycle. Specific local effects explain added value, investment, employment levels, and growth rates. These effects appear in a context of structural changes that are having a negative effect on manufacturing and a positive effect on so-called high-technology services. JEL codes: R11, R12, R58
