By taking into account the affects, the article seeks to formulate a theoretically valid and empirically observable version of the problem of the choice of affordances. Combining elements from american pragmatism with the situated approach to cognition, the perception of affordances is first approached as a phase of situated problem solving. On the basis of a review of the cognitive psychology literature dealing with the influence of affects on judgment, the affective variable, particularly humors, is then incorporated in the analysis of problem solving in order to suggest a possible explanation of the choice of affordances. Third, the hypotheses brought forward are empirically illustrated through examples drawn from a field study.
