This article offers a sociological analysis of the institutional and organizational foundations of a maximum security prison. The analysis follows from the results of an action-research – a psychodynamic study of work – conducted in Canada with the majority of the prison staff. The aim is to understand, from the point of view of the workers interviewed, the relations between the mission of a prison and the management methods in place.
