The War of Codes

On the map of digital conflicts about free software, open source and intellectual property rights, Échelle Inconnue tells the story of its struggle in favor of QR-Code (a free encoding and decoding device open to all) against the Flash Code, commercialized by Orange as a paying and proprietary device, promoted as an international standard. The struggle was successful in the city of Rouen, and since then twenty other cities have followed, preferring Échelle Inconnue’s coding system, bringing Orange to abandon their dreams of restricted and paying access.
