Research on symbolic or substantive corporate social responsibility (CSR) has focused on the organizational level, neglecting the individual level. The trend of research that focuses on the micro-foundations of CSR tends to treat individuals as objects rather than actors. Our article attempts to fill these two gaps by taking a practical perspective in order to explore how CSR managers individually contribute to shaping the symbolic and/or substantive character of CSR in the organization.
