In this interview, Archbishop Vincent Jordy, referring to the promulgation of motu proprio Antiquum ministerium, places the institution of the ministry of catechist within the current process of the new evangelisation. He sets it within the broader perspective of other texts and decisions by Pope Francis who is calling out for new ways to give life to the Church. What yet remains is the reception of this motu proprio, which hinges on several key questions: in what way are lay people going to be called to such a ministry? What kind of stability does this imply? In what ways might this ministry eventually stretch beyond just catechetical teaching? The catechetical model as lived in Africa seems to represent a source of inspiration, despite there being a huge cultural gap with the experience of the Church in France. The situation of the Church in France, with a more marked secularism than elsewhere, surely obliges it to show creativity and resourcefulness.
