In 2016, the Controller-General for Places of Deprivation of Liberty (CGLPL) denounced the fact that coercive measures are too readily used in our psychiatric care system. Divided between protecting public order and treating difficult patients, psychiatry shifts from one to the other without ever finding the right balance. It is essential that we examine the history of care practices and their impotence when faced with certain forms disorders, in order to develop a care system that will respect the dignity of individuals in our care while not overlooking the importance of security.
