Isolation and restraint: Practices in need of re-examination. The Unafam point of view

In this paper, Unafam (National Union of Families and Friends of the Mentally Ill and/or Disabled) reports on recent debate questioning the use of seclusion and restraint. This subject is still very much taboo in France, despite the fact that many experiments carried out abroad show that these practices can be limited or even abolished. Unafam calls for the establishing of a good practice protocol in mental health services, so as to avoid any recourse to these practices, with the prospect of ultimately abolishing them, for respect for the patient’s dignity, and for the establishing of a national observatory for restraint in psychiatry, which would collect and analyze data from institutions on their use of seclusion and restraint.
