Over the past twenty years, there has been a marked increase in applications for European nationalities based on family origins among Israeli citizens. This article proposes to examine the phenomenon by demonstrating what lies behind the attractivity of a European Union passport for Israelis despite the fact that they already enjoy a high degree of international mobility and that, for the most part, they have no plans to emigrate. It suggests that, beyond the limited advantages that a new nationality might provide, a European passport acts as a social marker that symbolically identifies the holders as descendants of the Ashkenazi elite.
