With regards to French municipal elections, municipalities with fewer than 1,000 inhabitants have received less attention than their more urban counterparts. However, the study of electoral configurations provides an opportunity to revisit higher turnout, which is traditionally associated with representations of elections in ‘small’ political scenes. Based on an empirical case study of the 2020 municipal elections in the department of Alpes-Maritimes in Southern France, this article highlights the diversity of electoral configurations in small municipalities. Moreover, it shows that such electoral configurations have a significant effect on levels of abstention in those municipalities, independent from and alongside their size.
