The recent publication of two unpublished works by Céline suggests that his interest in medicine was triggered by his participation in the Great War and its aftermath: he broke with his earlier inclinations; he gorged himself on the humors of tortured bodies, starting with his own; he learned medicine “sur le tas,” with the dead piled around him.
